The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is a hub of innovation, particularly in clean energy technologies. The NREL recently celebrated the opening of its new Research and Innovation Laboratory (RAIL) building, which will provide much-needed laboratory space for various research activities. The RAIL is a significant addition, marking the first new laboratory building on NREL’s Golden campus since 2013. This expansion aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s goals of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The new facility will focus on research areas like plastics upcycling, next-generation batteries, and advanced energy materials, contributing to the nation’s push toward clean energy.

In addition to RAIL, NREL is undergoing further expansion through the South Table Mountain Energy Park (STEP), acquired through a land swap with the state of Colorado. This area will host NREL’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center and Net Zero World Action Center, among other facilities, enhancing the laboratory’s capacity for groundbreaking research and collaboration.

Regarding the partnership between Colorado and Wyoming, it’s noteworthy that they are among the 16 finalists in the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines Competition. This initiative could provide significant funding—up to $160 million over ten years—to support regional collaborations in developing and commercializing innovative technologies, potentially including those focusing on climate resilience.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser’s support for these initiatives, especially those focusing on climate change, highlights the growing recognition of climate issues at the state level. His statement, “If you want peace, be prepared for war,” can be interpreted as a call for proactive and robust measures in addressing climate challenges, emphasizing the need for readiness and strong defenses against the adverse impacts of climate change.

These developments come at a time of increasing global tension, illustrated by events such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and recent attacks by Hamas on Israel. These conflicts underscore the importance of stability and resilience, not just in terms of global politics but also in our approach to environmental challenges. The climate crisis, much like geopolitical conflicts, requires foresight, preparedness, and robust action to mitigate risks and safeguard the future.

The emphasis on climate-resilient technologies reflects a global understanding that future technological advancements must consider climate impacts. The efforts by Colorado and Wyoming, supported by figures like Phil Weiser, are commendable steps toward a future where innovation and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.
