A fast-moving wildfire erupted in Orange County on Wednesday, forcing shelter-in-place orders and road closures across a wide area. The Gibby Fire, which started near Ortega Highway and Gibby Road, had grown to 216 acres as of Tuesday evening.
Cal Fire, California's firefighting authority, reported the fire started on September 2, 2026. The cause remains under investigation. Fire crews reported rapid growth, with the blaze expanding from approximately 130 acres to 216 acres during initial response operations.
Ortega Highway, also known as State Route 74, was closed in both directions near the fire's origin point. Eastbound traffic was closed at Gateway in Rancho Mission Viejo. Westbound traffic was shut down at Grand in Lake Elsinore. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect significant delays if traveling in Western Orange County.
Shelter-in-place orders covered portions of both Orange County and Riverside County, with residents in threatened zones instructed to remain indoors and away from windows.
The fire struck during the tail end of summer fire weather season in Southern California, when heat and low humidity accelerate fire spread. The Ortega Highway area's terrain has historically made fires dangerous.
Emergency officials said additional resources were being mobilized. The containment percentage reflects the portion of the fire perimeter that has been secured by firefighting efforts. Firefighters work on "containment" by creating firebreaks—cleared lines of vegetation designed to prevent the fire's advance.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection oversees the response, working with county and local fire agencies. Residents near the fire were advised to monitor local emergency alerts and follow all shelter-in-place and evacuation orders immediately if issued.
