Which 13 Districts Are on Red Alert?
The IMD Red Alert covers districts across Saurashtra, North Gujarat and parts of South Gujarat, including areas that experienced severe flooding during previous monsoon events. Districts such as Amreli, Junagadh, Porbandar, Jamnagar and Gir Somnath fall within the high-rainfall belt, with cumulative rainfall already running significantly above the seasonal average. The specific list of 13 districts may be updated by IMD as the weather system evolves.
What a Red Alert Means
IMD issues weather alerts in a colour-coded system:
- Green: No warning — normal conditions
- Yellow: Watch — heavy rainfall possible, be aware
- Orange: Alert — heavy to very heavy rain, be prepared
- Red: Warning — extremely heavy rainfall, take action immediately
A Red Alert means rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours is forecast. This level of precipitation can cause flash flooding, riverbank breaches, landslides in hilly terrain and urban waterlogging.
Flood Response Measures
The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has:
- Deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to vulnerable districts
- Pre-positioned boats and rescue equipment at key riverside locations
- Issued advisories to residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground
- Kept relief shelters ready with food, water and medical supplies
- Alerted fishermen not to venture into the Arabian Sea
Dam and Reservoir Monitoring
Gujarat’s major reservoirs — including Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) dam — were being monitored closely as inflows increased rapidly. Water release schedules are coordinated with downstream villages to ensure residents have adequate warning time. Communities near rivers that receive dam releases have been specifically alerted by district administration teams.

Residents in affected districts are urged to:
- Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and streams
