Heavy monsoon rainfall is heading toward Ahmedabad in two successive waves, and the India Meteorological Department has issued active alerts for Gujarat as the systems approach. Residents in low-lying areas and flood-prone zones are being advised to stay alert.
India’s Meteorological Department confirmed a well-marked low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is feeding increased moisture into Gujarat’s monsoon circulation. A second system is trailing it closely, meaning a sustained period of heavy rainfall is forecast over the coming days rather than a single passing shower.
Gujarat has already seen intense activity this season. Rivers in Saurashtra breached danger levels, with 28 deaths and over 24,000 evacuations reported in districts including Jamnagar, Morbi, and Rajkot in the season’s earlier weeks. South Gujarat — particularly Valsad district — has seen severe flooding in the most recent rainfall episode, with road damage and disruption to daily life in surrounding areas.
The monsoon track typically moves northward up the Gujarat coast, which puts Ahmedabad in line after coastal and south Gujarat districts. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has reviewed drainage clearance across the city. Low-lying areas in eastern Ahmedabad and sections along the Sabarmati River are the most likely to experience waterlogging when daily rainfall exceeds 80 to 100 mm within a short window.
Traffic advisories are in effect. The city’s underpasses — several of which are prone to filling rapidly — can reach dangerous water depths within 20 minutes of intense rainfall. Commuters are advised not to attempt to cross flooded underpasses and to use alternate routes.
India’s monsoon season runs through September in Gujarat. Ahmedabad’s water supply reservoirs benefit from this rainfall, but the challenge is absorbing intense bursts without flooding residential zones. Health authorities note that post-flooding periods typically see a rise in waterborne illnesses including diarrhoea and leptospirosis. Residents are advised to boil drinking water during and after heavy rainfall.
Schools in areas under orange and red IMD alerts have received instructions from district authorities regarding possible closures, confirmed based on actual rainfall intensity.
