Used electric car sales in Australia rose 54.6% in the first half of 2026, compared with the same period last year. The growth came while the wider second-hand car market fell. Here is what the numbers show, and what they mean for buyers.

Used electric vehicle sales increased 54.6% in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025, according to the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and AutoGrab data reported by NRMA. Plug-in hybrid used sales rose 468.4%, from a much smaller base. Over the same period, the broader used car market fell.

Pickles, the auction house, recorded 384 used EV sales at its auctions in the second quarter of 2026. Those figures cover Pickles only, not the whole market. Pickles’ average used EV sale price rose from $35,500 in January to $41,500 in April, then fell to $35,500 in May, according to NRMA.

Why used EV prices moved

Prices moved because supply grew. NRMA reports that used EV prices softened as more vehicles came onto the market. The average time to sell a used EV fell from more than 60 days in January to fewer than 40 days by June, according to AutoGrab.

Think of it like a phone that drops in price when a new model launches. When more used EVs reach the market, buyers gain more choice, and sellers have to compete.

Is it a good time to buy a used EV in Australia? Prices have softened as supply has grown, which gives buyers more choice. Check the battery health report, charging access at home and running costs before you buy.

The 54.6% rise suggests Australians are buying second-hand EVs in larger numbers. This is analysis, not a finding about any single model.
