A fast-moving wildfire ignited near Airway Heights, Washington, on August 1, 2026, prompting immediate evacuations. The fire spread quickly through dry grass and brush west of Spokane, driven by afternoon winds.

The Spokane County Emergency Management office issued Level 3 “Go Now” orders for several neighborhoods. Law enforcement went door-to-door in the affected zones. A temporary evacuation shelter was set up at a local school. KREM News reported that flames were visible from Highway 2, which was closed in both directions near the fire zone.

The Spokesman-Review detailed that the fire started around 2 p.m. local time and grew to roughly 2,500 acres within hours. Fire crews from multiple departments, including the Washington Department of Natural Resources, responded. Air tankers and helicopters dropped retardant and water, but hot, dry conditions made containment difficult. By nightfall, containment remained at 0 percent.

No injuries were immediately reported, but several outbuildings were destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Red Cross volunteers assisted evacuees at the shelter, providing meals and information.

Incident commanders warned that the fire behavior was extreme due to low humidity and fuel loads built up from a dry spring. The National Weather Service had issued a red flag warning for the region earlier in the day. Winds were expected to ease overnight, which could help ground crews build containment lines.

The Spokane region has seen an increase in early-August fire starts in recent years. The fire burned through an area that had experienced close calls in past dry seasons. Local officials urged residents to register for emergency alerts and have go-bags ready.

The fire near Airway Heights grew fast, forced evacuations, and burned structures. Crews worked through the night under a red flag warning with no containment yet reported.
