On July 29, 2026, the Trump administration unfroze $600 million in funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The next day, it formally cut the World Health Organization out of the alliance. The rapid sequence brought immediate confusion and sharp political reactions.
The $600 million release came after months of frozen funds. Gavi uses pooled resources to buy vaccines for low-income countries. A Gavi spokesperson said the money would help immunize children against measles, polio, and other diseases. The move directly bypassed the WHO, which traditionally co-manages many vaccine distribution programs.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Senator Marco Rubio had pressed the administration about thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative used in some multi-dose vaccine vials. The Politico report noted that the two officials raised autism-related concerns, reviving a dispute that major health agencies have repeatedly dismissed. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that studies show no link between thimerosal and autism. Yet the political weight of the argument seemed to influence the decision to detach WHO from Gavi oversight.
The White House did not release a lengthy statement. A fact sheet posted on whitehouse.gov described the actions as a step to ensure “direct and accountable” vaccine aid. The Gavi CEO told reporters that the organization would continue its work, but acknowledged that severing WHO coordination might slow some distribution networks.
By July 30, the WHO’s involvement in Gavi’s board and technical committees ended. The alliance announced an emergency meeting to adjust its governance. Several European governments expressed concern about the sudden break, but no immediate pledges of additional funding were made.
The events unfolded as several vaccine-preventable outbreaks continued in parts of Africa and Asia. The $600 million will help cover Gavi’s immediate procurement needs, but long-term program stability remains uncertain without WHO’s field infrastructure.
The administration unfroze the funds, then removed the WHO from the alliance. The debate over thimerosal and autism, despite scientific consensus against a link, formed part of the backdrop to the policy change.
