In July 2026, Elon Musk promised his xAI tool, Grok Imagine, would produce a “full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer” before the end of the year. What arrived on X on October 23 was a seven-minute animated clip that critics dismissed—and that Musk’s own Grok chatbot acknowledged was not historically accurate.

The seven-minute Episode 1 of The Odyssey was released by the @Imagine account on X, produced in collaboration with London-based Wonder Studios under director Dev Walker. The Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw described the result as “meaningless as a laptop screensaver,” citing robotic voices and lifeless visuals. Wired reported that the Grok AI chatbot itself, when asked by users to evaluate the video, confirmed it was not historically accurate. Musk launched the project in July after publicly attacking director Christopher Nolan’s live-action Odyssey over its casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon.

For filmmakers and viewers wondering if generative AI is ready to rival Hollywood studios before the end of 2026, Grok Imagine’s debut provides a clear benchmark: not yet. Even with a professional London production partner curating the prompts, current AI video struggles with flat, robotic voice delivery, stiff character continuity, and repetitive framing—forcing Musk to quietly shift from a promised “full-length movie” to short experimental web episodes.

“Laptop Screensaver” Visuals and Grok’s Own Fact-Check

Peter Bradshaw’s review singled out the audio as the production’s weakest point, describing deadpan robotic voice work delivered in a flat English-language register across a cast rendered with the visual coherence of early video game cinematics. The Hollywood Reporter and Wired noted that Wonder Studios acknowledged the gap themselves, with the company stating that “the goal is that the last episode we make is radically better than the first.” The Grok chatbot’s own assessment of the video’s historical accuracy—prompted by users shortly after Episode 1 went live—returned a response confirming the AI film was not consistent with historical record. For context on where AI video tools currently sit in the broader market, AI video generation tools in Hollywood and xAI Grok controversies cover the competitive and corporate backdrop.

Musk’s stated purpose was a version “true to the art of Homer’s Odyssey“—yet Episode 1 depicts Odysseus agonising over whether to join the Greek fleet sailing to sack Troy. That event does not appear in Homer’s Odyssey, which opens 20 years after Troy has already fallen, with Odysseus stranded on Calypso’s island. The scene Grok Imagine dramatised comes from the Cypria, a separate and mostly lost Epic Cycle poem, not Homer. Grok’s own chatbot confirmed the historical inaccuracy when users asked directly.

*Why did Elon Musk make an AI version of The Odyssey? Elon Musk announced the Grok Imagine Odyssey* project in July 2026 after criticising director Christopher Nolan’s live-action adaptation for casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk promised his xAI tool would generate a “historically accurate” full-length film true to Homer before the end of 2026.

Wonder Studios and Musk have provided no confirmed timeline for Episode 2 or any update on the original “full-length movie before year-end” commitment. The project has moved from a complete film promise to an episodic release format, with no announced schedule for subsequent episodes.
