A fast-moving wildfire burning north of Spokane, Washington, forced mandatory evacuations as it grew to 979 acres on August 2, 2026. The Fairview Fire, first reported the previous day near Mead, was 0% contained.
Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders were expanded for residents in the fire zone. A shelter was opened for displaced residents. Officials with Spokane County Fire District 9 said dry, windy conditions were pushing flames through timber and brush, and air tankers and helicopters dropped retardant and water through the afternoon.
No injuries or structure losses were confirmed, though flames were seen near homes. A red flag warning remained in effect. The cause of the Fairview Fire is under investigation.
