If you sleep with a lamp on or your television quietly running, new research has a message: it might be affecting your heart structure.
A study of over 11,000 people published in the European Heart Journal found something unexpected. People who slept in nighttime light showed measurable changes in how their heart chambers were shaped and functioned. The longer the light exposure, the more pronounced the changes became.
The study is straightforward in design. Participants wore wrist-mounted light sensors for seven days. Three years later, they underwent cardiac MRI scans. Researchers compared heart structure in people with little or no nighttime light exposure against those sleeping in bright conditions. The differences were clear.
People sleeping in more than 3 lux of light showed thickening of the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber. The walls thickened while the internal space actually shrank. The chamber's ability to stretch and relax during heartbeats decreased. Both changes signal early heart dysfunction, similar to what happens when the heart works under chronic stress.
Lux is a standardized measurement of illumination. For sleep quality, specialists recommend bedrooms stay at 1 lux maximum—very dark. A typical 60-watt incandescent bulb at varying distances produces different illumination levels depending on shade and room surfaces. Modern LED bedside lights often produce much higher illumination. Television screens typically exceed 50 lux from a viewing distance of two meters.
To put 3 lux in perspective: full moon illuminance at ground level on a clear night is approximately 0.05–0.3 lux. Three lux is roughly 10-30 times brighter than a full moon—comparable to the light level during civil twilight, the period shortly after sunset or before sunrise.
The mechanism works through circadian disruption. Light signals your brain that it's daytime. Exposure at night confuses your circadian rhythm—the biological 24-hour cycle regulating sleep, hormone production, and nervous system tone. This confusion is associated with changes to your heart structure similar to responses under chronic stress.
The study found statistically significant associations between nighttime light exposure and cardiac changes. Importantly, this is observational research. It establishes association, not proof of cause-and-effect. Other factors might explain why people sleeping with lights on also have cardiac changes—perhaps they have underlying circadian disorders, or perhaps other lifestyle factors differ between groups.
The practical message is supported by the evidence: darker bedrooms are better for your heart. Black out curtains, covering LED indicators on devices, and avoiding television or bright lights before sleep all help. If medical needs require nighttime light—if you live with a vision problem or mobility concerns—use the lowest necessary brightness and consider red-light options, which research suggests minimally disrupt circadian rhythm.
The findings add to evidence linking nighttime light exposure with cardiovascular health, although the observational design cannot establish that reducing bedroom light will prevent heart disease. Heart remodeling takes time. Addressing sleep environment now may be simpler than treating heart dysfunction later.
