Millions of older pensioners in the UK are getting letters about winter fuel payments, and this year comes with some important changes and deadlines that matter for people who may qualify.

The Department for Work and Pensions says eligible people will receive letters in October or November telling them how much they will get. This brings pensioners back into a scheme that was previously restricted. This is good news for many, but the catch is that some people might end up repaying the money later through their tax bill if their income is high enough. It’s not straightforward, which is why understanding the details now saves headaches later.

Here’s what you need to know right now. The qualifying week is September 21 to 27, 2026. If you’re eligible during that week, you’ll likely get a letter in October or November, with most payments arriving in November or December 2026. The payment ranges from £100 to £300 depending on your age and household situation.

The tricky part involves income. If your total yearly income is above £35,000, you don’t automatically get turned away. You can still receive the full payment, but the government will collect an amount equal to the payment later through your tax code or, for people filing Self Assessment, through their tax bill. So it’s not that you lose the money immediately—you get it in winter, then repay it gradually through tax.

But here’s the important date: September 20, 2026 is the opt-out deadline. If you don’t want the payment for any reason, you need to opt out by 11:59pm that evening if you’re going online or using a form. If you’re calling, the telephone deadline closes earlier at 6pm on September 18. Once you opt out, you don’t need to do it again next year. Opting out doesn’t affect your State Pension either—they’re completely separate.

To be eligible, you need to have been born on or before June 27, 1960 and normally live in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Scotland runs a different scheme called Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. Most eligible people receive Winter Fuel Payment automatically, although some people need to claim. Claims for winter 2026-27 open September 21.

One more thing worth noting: GOV.UK warns that messages asking for personal details such as bank details or passwords could be scams. Don’t respond to unsolicited messages asking for this information.

If you’re not sure whether you qualify or when you’ll get paid, check the official government website. Having clarity now about amounts, dates, and what happens with income above the threshold means you can plan better for winter costs.
