Europe whistled in its first major heat wave of the summer on Tuesday, as Barcelona recorded its hottest June in over a century. Barcelona’s Fabra Observatory reported an average temperature for last month of 26 C (78 F), breaking records since the data began in 1914. It said a single-day high of 37.9 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) for June was recorded Monday. Barcelona generally witnesses the worst heat in Spain, thanks to its location between hills and the Mediterranean.
Ramón Pascual, a delegate for Spain’s weather service in Barcelona, told The Associated Press the “very intense heat wave” is clearly linked to global warming. Spain’s weather service said recent surface temperatures for the Mediterranean near the Balearic Islands are 5 to 6 degrees Celsius higher than average.

Germany faces a potentially record-breaking heatwave with temperatures expected to surge close to 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, threatening to surpass the all-time national record of 41.2 degrees Celsius set in July 2019. The extreme heat has already led more than 40 districts to restrict water usage and sparked forest fires in Brandenburg state near Berlin, with authorities scrambling to set up cooling centers and hotlines for vulnerable populations. Municipal leaders are calling for five billion euros annually from federal and state governments to cope with increasingly frequent heatwaves, as Cologne zoo workers and hospital staff implement creative cooling strategies to endure working in the blazing sun.
