Europe is battling an extreme heatwave with Barcelona recording its hottest June since 1914, averaging 26°C, while Spain saw a new national June record of 46°C in Huelva province. France has placed several regions under the highest red alert with Paris particularly affected, closing the Eiffel Tower summit and over 1,300 schools, as experts warn future summers could be up to 4°C warmer by 2100. The scorching conditions extend across the continent with Portugal confirming its highest-ever June temperature of 46.6°C, while Turkey battles wind-driven wildfires that have forced the evacuation of 50,000 residents and damaged dozens of homes.

Paris faces extreme temperatures today with the Eiffel Tower’s summit closed and vehicle restrictions enforced as France’s heatwave reaches its peak, with forecasts of up to 41°C in some areas.

Authorities have placed 16 departments under the highest heat warning level and closed nearly 1,350 schools across the country as scientists link the increasing intensity of such heatwaves to human-induced climate change.

The scorching conditions extend beyond France, with record temperatures also affecting Portugal, Spain, Italy, and other Mediterranean countries, increasing wildfire risks and prompting mass evacuations in Turkey where wind-fueled blazes have threatened over 50,000 people.
