Three of Britain’s most experienced weather presenters are leaving the BBC, taking nearly nine decades of combined forecasting expertise with them. As millions depend on accurate forecasts to stay alive, the corporation is replacing forecasters with automated graphics and scrapping half-hourly updates.
The Departures
Tomasz Schafernaker, Louise Lear, and Darren Bett represent 86 years of forecasting expertise. They join Carol Kirkwood, who took redundancy in January 2026 after 25 years at the BBC. Their departures represent the systematic dismantling of experienced weather communication when public trust in accurate forecasts is not valuable—it is essential.
The Cuts
The BBC’s reduction to 4.5 positions means fewer people covering more broadcasting slots during unprecedented climate volatility. The remaining forecasters will split between London and Salford, fragmenting institutional knowledge and complicating coordinated messaging.
Half-hourly News Channel updates are being replaced by automated graphics—which cannot explain pressure systems, cannot provide context, cannot reassure with the clarity of a trusted presenter. Radio forecasts will now be read by programme presenters rather than specialists, another reduction in expertise at the moment maximum expertise is required.
These are not abstract changes. In the context of 2,877 heatwave deaths, they represent a degradation of public communication infrastructure during maximum crisis stress.
