The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6 percent COLA for 2027. Social Security benefits rise for December 2026 benefits payable in January 2027. Federal SSI payment levels rise for January 2027 payments. The January SSI payment is at the end of the preceding December because January 1 is a holiday.

The COLA formula compares the average CPI-W in Q3 of the current year with Q3 of the last year in which the COLA took effect. The formula rounds the increase to the nearest tenth. Q3 2025 was 317.265. Q3 2026 was 328.746. This formula yields the 3.6 percent increase.
