Nate and Nelson Rouette, brothers and longtime sport fishermen in Massachusetts, caught a juvenile tiger shark off a Cape Cod beach in late July 2026. The five-foot shark shouldn’t have been there. Tiger sharks are far more common in Caribbean waters and tropical regions, not New England.

Their catch represents something larger than a single fishing story. It’s visual evidence that Atlantic Ocean temperatures are rising in ways that make New England hospitable to species that historically belonged thousands of miles south.

Tiger sharks can grow to over 15 feet and weigh 1,400 pounds. They eat virtually anything—fish, crustaceans, birds, and infamously, random man-made objects like old license plates and shoes that have been found in their stomachs. Adult tiger sharks are more dangerous to humans than most shark species, though unprovoked fatal bites remain rare.

What makes this catch unusual isn’t just the species present in northern waters. It’s a juvenile specimen. Young tiger sharks are historically less common than adults in northern waters. Finding a juvenile this far north suggests that warming waters may be making parts of the region more suitable habitat, though more evidence is needed to confirm whether breeding populations are becoming established.

The Rouette brothers’ catch fits into a larger pattern. Great white sharks have been sighted increasingly frequently off Cape Cod. They’ve also been spotted off New Hampshire and Maine. These apex predators are moving north as ocean temperatures rise.

Other marine species are making similar migrations. Black sea bass, once found primarily in southern waters, are increasingly caught by New England fishermen. This biological shift happens when ocean temperatures warm enough to become hospitable to species with different thermal requirements.

John Chisholm, adjunct scientist at the New England Aquarium‘s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, confirmed that rising sea temperatures have made the Atlantic Ocean off New England more suitable for tiger sharks. Scientists attribute the shift in great white sightings to multiple factors including higher seal populations—the sharks’ primary prey—and warming waters that allow species to expand their ranges northward.

Ocean warming is directly linked to climate change. As greenhouse gases trap heat, global temperatures rise. This warms surface ocean waters, gradually shifting isothermal lines—the boundaries where temperature changes dramatically—northward. Species evolved to thrive within specific temperature ranges. When waters warm, they follow the temperatures they need.

Fishermen in Massachusetts are increasingly catching tropical species. This creates both opportunity and uncertainty. Recreational fishing changes when new species arrive. Beach safety protocols may need adjustment as apex predators expand their ranges.

Scientists aren’t alarmed by occasional tropical shark sightings. Unprovoked shark attacks remain statistically rare. But the presence of species previously unknown in New England waters demonstrates how rapidly climate change is reshaping North American marine ecosystems.

For the Rouette brothers, releasing that tiger shark back into the Atlantic was anticlimactic after the excitement of the catch. But the species’ presence serves as a reminder that ocean changes happening invisibly below the surface are resurfacing in visible ways.
