# Musk Oversees xAI Colossus in Memphis as Gas Turbine Emissions Raise Alarms

Elon Musk says he’s sleeping in an Airstream trailer in Memphis while overseeing xAI’s Colossus supercomputer buildout. Near that trailer, a longer-running dispute over the site’s gas turbines and air permits is the bigger story.

Musk revealed the living arrangement during a taping of the All-In podcast this week, calling the trailer his “palace.” SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell backed up the claim, saying Musk “sleeps on the factory floor,” pointing to how he stayed at Twitter’s offices after buying the company in 2022. The Colossus site trains xAI’s Grok AI model and was reportedly built out in around 122 days. The company has also announced plans for a fourth data center, called Minihard.

Large new electricity demand from AI data centers can raise questions about grid investment and cost allocation. Whether local residents ultimately face higher bills depends on utility rate structures and regulatory decisions still being worked out. For people elsewhere, this buildout shows regional power grids are absorbing heavy new commercial demand, which can affect local utility rates and emissions standards well beyond Memphis.

The Hidden Energy Cost of Rapid AI Deployment

The site initially relied on a limited grid connection and supplemented it with gas turbines while xAI pursued a larger allocation; company statements have pointed to a target requirement of around 150 megawatts to run at full capacity. Regulatory scrutiny has focused on whether these turbines secured the air permits required under the Clean Air Act, since aerial imaging and local reporting have shown more turbines in operation at times than had been formally permitted. A separate, larger power plant under construction for the site’s expansion is going through its own permitting process, including a permit approved in Mississippi for dozens of turbines at a related “Colossus 2” facility.

Most coverage of Musk’s trailer treats it as an eccentric personal choice. The regulatory record around the site tells a more contested story, with residents, environmental groups and local officials raising questions about emissions and permitting that predate the trailer story by over a year.

How much electricity does xAI Colossus use? xAI has said its site needs around 150 megawatts to operate at full capacity, drawing from both the local utility grid and a fleet of gas turbines. The exact number of turbines in operation has varied at different points and been a point of dispute between the company, regulators and local residents.

Permitting disputes around the Memphis and Mississippi sites have been ongoing since 2025, including hearings and appeals before local air pollution control boards. Further regulatory decisions on the site’s permanent power plant remain pending.
