Yemen’s Red Sea fighting now links military claims, oil routes and defence-pact pressure in one escalation chain.

A wider escalation chain

The latest Houthi claim is not a standalone battlefield update. The group claimed an attack on a Saudi base as fighting flared with Yemen’s government forces, while separate reporting says a Saudi oil pipeline was shut after a drone attack from Iraq. The timing links military claims, energy routes, and defence-pact pressure.

The sequence began earlier in the week. NPR reported Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities that wounded 73 people. Al Jazeera then reported Houthi gains around Mocha, near the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The Guardian reported the Houthis had taken the key Yemeni port of Mocha in a drive along the Red Sea coast. By September 12 and 13, multiple outlets were reporting Houthi claims of missile and drone attacks on a Saudi military base.

Why Bab al-Mandeb matters

Bab al-Mandeb is a narrow route linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It matters for shipping and energy flows. CNN reported that the Houthis had captured Perim Island and Mocha while seeking control of the strait. That makes the territorial gains part of a wider pressure campaign, not only a local Yemeni fight.

Al Jazeera’s live coverage said Yemen’s air force targeted Houthi vehicles in Dhubab and Mocha and that Saudi Arabia carried out strikes on areas recently taken by the Houthis. Those details show that the front is still active and contested.

Mecca Pact pressure and pipeline risk

The diplomatic layer is the Mecca Pact. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Houthi attacks could activate the pact, but later reporting said Pakistan had not discussed a military response. That public hedging matters. It means the pact is being tested politically before it is tested militarily.

The pipeline dimension adds another risk. CNN reported that a Saudi East-West pipeline was shuttered after drones from Iraq hit it, while no party claimed responsibility. Trump pointed toward Tehran and Iranian proxies in Iraq, according to CNN. The Telegraph reported that Saudi oil supplies could run out “within days” after the pipeline attack. That claim should be attributed to the Telegraph, not presented as verified supply certainty.

Karmactive’s earlier story focused on the Houthi advance toward a critical shipping route. This follow-up is about the consequences: a claimed Saudi base strike, an Iraq-linked pipeline attack, Mecca Pact pressure, and the strategic question of Bab al-Mandeb.

The Houthis’ base-strike claim remains a claim. The pipeline attack remains unattributed. The Mecca Pact has not been confirmed as activated. What is clear is that several separate pressure points now connect in one escalation chain.
