Tamil Nadu has revised auto-rickshaw fares for the first time since 2013. The minimum fare is now ₹50 for the first 1.8 kilometres, up from ₹25.

Under Government Order Ms. No. 366, dated October 27, 2026, issued by the Home Department’s Transport-I section, passengers will pay ₹25 for every additional kilometre. The earlier rate was ₹12 per kilometre.

The Tamil Nadu auto fare hike 2026 applies to contract-carriage auto-rickshaws operating in the Chennai Metropolitan Area and other regions of Tamil Nadu. The order directs the State Transport Authority and concerned Regional Transport Authorities to fix the revised fares in their areas.

Night travel between 10 pm and 5 am will cost 1.5 times the regular fare. The waiting charge is ₹1 per minute.

On ghat routes, the base fare is ₹60 and the additional fare is ₹30 per kilometre. The ghat fare is fixed at 1.2 times the minimum fare.

For Tamil Nadu commuters, the revised tariff sets a clear metered base of ₹50 for the first 1.8 kilometres and ₹25 for every additional kilometre. A direct five-kilometre trip works out at ₹130 in daytime: ₹50 for the first 1.8 km plus ₹80 for the remaining 3.2 km. At night, the same distance calculates to ₹195 before any waiting charge or other applicable addition.

The notification says fare cards and conversion tables must be displayed inside auto-rickshaws until fare meters are recalibrated to the revised structure. Passengers can verify the conversion table by scanning the QR code on the fare chart.

The order does not automatically change fares charged by app-based platforms. Any change to Ola, Uber or Rapido pricing would depend on those platforms’ own fare rules and agreements.
