A Connecticut pet-food maker has pulled 639 bags of frozen raw dog food after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration testing found Salmonella in the product. The recall covers one lot of Oma’s Pride “Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe,” a 6-pound bag containing 12 individually wrapped portions.

The affected lot carries the code BB012729 and was sent to retailers and wholesalers in 11 states — Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia — as well as sold directly to consumers through online frozen shipments. Three illnesses in dogs have been linked to the product; the company clarified on August 17 that no human illnesses have been reported.

Dogs and cats can carry Salmonella without looking sick, then shed it in their stool and saliva and spread it around the home. People who handle raw pet food can pick up the infection themselves. Owners with the recalled lot should stop feeding it, discard the food, and sanitize any bowls, containers, hands and surfaces that touched it.

The case is a reminder that raw pet food carries a known, recurring Salmonella risk that both regulators and veterinarians warn about. It follows other FDA actions on the same pathogen, including a separate Class I egg recall and a multistate Salmonella outbreak traced to peppers.
