A local McDonald’s franchisee has expanded the annual backpack program, providing free school supplies to hundreds of students in underserved communities ahead of the 2026-2027 school year. The initiative demonstrates how corporate partnerships can address educational equity challenges.
The backpack program began as a single franchisee’s response to observing students without basic school supplies. What started as a modest effort has grown significantly, with the expanded 2026 program distributing over 500 backpacks filled with essential items including notebooks, pencils, folders, erasers, and other classroom necessities.
“We see firsthand how families struggle to afford back-to-school supplies,” said Lindsay Wallin, the franchisee leading the initiative. “This program removes one barrier so students can start the year ready to learn.”
Participating schools identify students whose families face financial hardship during the back-to-school season. The Department of Education recognizes that students without adequate supplies experience higher rates of absenteeism and lower academic performance. The program targets this specific barrier to educational access.
The expanded initiative includes a community support component where local volunteers help organize and distribute backpacks. Student volunteers also participate, learning about community service while contributing to their peers’ educational success.
Funding for the program comes from the franchisee’s business profits and community donations. Local businesses, civic organizations, and individuals contribute supplies and financial support. The model demonstrates how multiple community partners can collaborate on educational equity initiatives without relying entirely on government funding.
Teachers report that students appreciate receiving new school supplies and feeling recognized by their communities. The psychological impact extends beyond the material benefit—students recognize that adults in their community care about their educational success.
The franchisee plans to continue and expand the program in future years, with goals to reach additional schools and provide supplies to more students facing economic barriers to education.
