A baby’s trip to the emergency room has led Gerber to pull its teething sticks from store shelves. The company announced on January 31, 2024, that babies might choke on these products, which come in banana and strawberry apple flavors.

“We received complaints about babies choking on these teething sticks,” Gerber said in their announcement. The company immediately stopped selling all sizes of the Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks and is asking parents to bring them back to the store for a refund.

These teething products were sold in stores and online across most of the country. They reached families in 45 states and Puerto Rico, excluding Alaska, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Parents who bought these teething sticks need to take two steps right away. First, stop giving them to your baby. Second, take them back to the store where you bought them to get your money back. If you’re worried your baby might have had problems with these sticks, call your doctor.

Gerber knows this recall might worry parents. They’ve set up a special phone line that’s open all day, every day. Parents can call 1-800-4-GERBER (1-800-443-7237) with any questions or concerns.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is working with Gerber to handle this safety issue. This recall stands out because Gerber doesn’t often pull products from stores. Their last big recall was in 2023 for baby formula, and before that in 2016 for baby food pouches that showed potential for spoilage during transport and handling.

For parents, this recall matters because teething is a time when babies need safe products. When teeth are growing, having reliable products matters for a baby’s safety. Gerber’s decision to stop selling these products and start a recall shows they’re taking the reported choking incidents seriously.
