The Democratic Republic of Congo faces the deadliest Ebola outbreak in its history, with the death toll passing 2,500 and confirmed cases exceeding 5,000. The outbreak, declared on 15 May 2026, reached record severity earlier in August when confirmed deaths crossed 2,325, establishing itself as the nation’s worst epidemic on record.

The acceleration has prompted urgent international action. The United Nations’ International Coordinating Group has authorized the shipment of 70,000 doses of Ervebo vaccine to protect frontline communities and health workers in affected regions. Ervebo is licensed and recommended by the World Health Organization for use in Ebola virus outbreaks and is licensed for use against Ebola virus disease.

The speed of transmission has alarmed international health authorities. Julien Harneis, UN Senior Ebola Coordinator, warned that the outbreak is “spreading faster and wider” than before, with the disease expanding exponentially across populations. The World Health Organization flagged the vaccine deployment as essential given the pace of transmission and the mounting death toll now exceeding 2,500.

The vaccine response carries particular significance for health workers and vulnerable populations in contact with infected individuals. Ring vaccination—immunizing people exposed to confirmed cases—offers protection while containing transmission pathways. The arrival of 70,000 doses represents a substantial intervention to shield frontline responders and protect surrounding communities from further spread.

Clinical investigation will accompany deployment efforts. A vaccine trial is set to begin in the Democratic Republic of Congo as international health agencies coordinate the response. This parallel effort to gather evidence on vaccine effectiveness during active outbreak conditions reflects the dual commitment to both immediate containment and systematic documentation of results.

The outbreak’s trajectory marks a critical moment for the nation’s health infrastructure and its capacity to respond to large-scale crises. Previous Ebola epidemics in the region have challenged response systems, and this outbreak—already the deadliest—continues to test the limits of available resources and personnel. The speed of transmission and magnitude of the death toll underscore the strain on health services across affected areas.

The 70,000-dose shipment and the accompanying vaccine trial mark the latest response to an outbreak that has already become the deadliest Ebola event in the country’s recorded history.
