Knorr-Bremse unveiled a significant expansion of its Technology Center India (TCI) in Pune on September 19, 2023. This strategic move aims to bolster its presence in India’s growing mobility market. The expansion represents a multi-million-euro investment in a new building complex, featuring research and development (R&D) and technical support facilities for both Rail and Commercial Vehicle Systems divisions. The inauguration ceremony saw the attendance of business partners, employees, and senior management from the Knorr-Bremse Group.
TCI in Pune is set to support Knorr-Bremse Group sites worldwide as a high-performance engineering and IT center. With this expansion, TCI is poised to become one of the Group’s key innovation hubs, offering a wide range of R&D, engineering, and IT services. The investment aims to strengthen Knorr-Bremse’s position in the Indian marketplace, with the new building project falling in the upper single-digit million-euro range.
Marc Llistosella, CEO of Knorr-Bremse AG, emphasized the importance of this expansion, highlighting the company’s ambition to drive growth through its Rail and Truck divisions in India and other key markets. Arun Bhat, Managing Director of TCI, noted the enhancement of R&D capacity and underscored India’s significance as a promising market and an attractive engineering and development hub.
Strategically located near the existing TCI development center in Pune’s modern Hinjewadi suburb, the new building was completed rapidly, showcasing intensive planning and swift implementation. The expanded TCI will house approximately 1,300 experts working on various aspects of product development, engineering, hardware and software, IT, simulations, and virtual testing. These experts will play a crucial role in advancing the Group’s core innovation and development activities, focusing on next-generation train and truck braking systems.
The new TCI complex adheres to Green Building standards, aligning with Knorr-Bremse’s Climate Strategy 2030 and contributing to the site’s climate neutrality. In line with the Paris Climate Accord, the company has set ambitious targets to reduce production-related carbon emissions by 75% compared to 2018. A significant portion of the energy requirements for the new site will be met through solar power generated by roof-mounted panels.
During the inaugural tech event, a variety of product innovations were showcased, all designed to enhance safe, efficient, and eco-friendly travel on India’s roads and railroads. Featured products included AirSupply Smart and CubeControl for Rail Vehicle Systems, and GSAT Global Scalable Air Treatment system and GSBC Global Scalable Brake Control ECU 2 for Commercial Vehicle Systems. These innovations are set to make rail mobility more efficient and widely available globally.
The expansion of TCI reflects Knorr-Bremse’s commitment to investing in India and leveraging the country’s engineering prowess. This strategic initiative is expected to meet complex customer needs and manage anticipated market growth both in India and globally. The development of pioneering transportation technologies at TCI will play a central role in enhancing Knorr-Bremse’s business. The company’s investment in sustainable building design showcases its dedication to environmental responsibility and climate action. With this expansion, Knorr-Bremse is well-positioned to contribute to the advancement of transportation technologies in India and beyond, navigating the evolving mobility landscape.
