BYD, a probable Tesla challenger in new energy vehicles, unveiled the SEAL earlier this year. Seal is a dynamic and intelligent electric vehicle, hinting at BYD’s persistence in bringing up future technology. The SEAL boasts a 4D dynamic exterior, embodying the essence of the ocean with its Ocean X design language. “The BYD SEAL is not just a car, but a mobile space integrating technology, art, and life,” stated BYD’s Branding and PR Director, Stella Li. The vehicle’s interior is inspired by the concept of “Dynamic Elegance,” blending luxury with functionality.
BYD’s SEAL is equipped with the DiPilot advanced driving assistance system, ensuring enhanced safety and driving experience. The DiPilot system integrates 5G, V2X, and AI, offering features like automatic parking and traffic jam assistance. BYD showcased six electric vehicles at the Internationale Automobilausstellung (IAA) in Munich from 5-10 September 2023, including the Seal. In less than a year, BYD introduced six electric vehicles to the European market, emphasizing its rapid expansion.
New technologies which are integrated in BYD vehicles, such as CTB (Cell-to-Body) and iTAC (Intelligent Torque Adaption Control), were also unveiled at the event. The IAA event marked the European debut of BYD’s luxury sub-brand, DENZA, with the spotlight on the DENZA D9, a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. BYD’s entry into the European passenger car market began with the debut of three models at the Paris Motor Show 2022. The BYD DOLPHIN, a C-segment hatchback, was introduced in the summer of 2023, followed by the BYD SEAL in the autumn.
IAA Mobility in Munich served as the platform for BYD to introduce the Ocean-inspired BYD SEAL and BYD SEAL U to European audiences. The BYD SEAL, their D-segment sedan, received the prestigious iF Design Award for its sporty design and innovative features. The SEAL utilizes BYD’s CTB technology, integrating the body and Blade Battery for enhanced structural strength. The vehicle offers an impressive driving range of 570/520km (WLTP combined) and is available with the 82.5 kWh BYD Blade Battery.
The BYD SEAL U, symbolizing utility, made its European premiere, showcasing versatility and high specifications. The SEAL U can accommodate five passengers and offers a generous cargo capacity, making it a highly handy choice. The vehicle comes in two trim levels, with the Design version offering a 500km WLTP range.
Michael Shu, General Manager and Managing Director of BYD Europe, emphasized BYD’s dedication to introducing eco-friendly cars to Europe. On August 9th, 2023, BYD achieved a significant milestone by rolling off its 5 millionth new energy vehicle, the DENZA N7. This accomplishment made BYD the first automaker globally to reach this landmark in new energy vehicle production. “Today marks a historic moment for BYD,” said Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, during the celebratory ceremony. Wang Chuanfu expressed gratitude to global customers, industry partners, and dedicated employees for this achievement.
It took BYD 13 years to produce its first million new energy vehicles, but only nine months to go from four to five million. In 2022, BYD’s new energy vehicle sales exceeded 1.86 million, showcasing remarkable growth. By July 2023, BYD’s cumulative sales volume reached 1.5 million units, with 92,469 units sold overseas. Since 2010, BYD has been expanding its global presence, introducing electric buses and taxis for public transit electrification. BYD’s electric public transport solutions are now operational in over 400 cities across more than 70 countries.
The BYD ATTO 3 has led new energy vehicle sales in countries like Thailand, Israel, and Singapore. In July 2023, BYD announced plans to establish three new factories in Brazil, strengthening its industry position. Founded in 1995, BYD has consistently pioneered technological advancements in the electric vehicle sector. Innovations like the Blade Battery and e-Platform 3.0 have solidified BYD’s position as an industry trailblazer. So much so, BYD’s technology has been adopted by major players, including Tesla. In 2022, BYD poured a whopping RMB 20 billion into research and development, which was a huge 90.31% increase compared to the previous year.
Fast forward to July 2023, and BYD has gone ahead and filed for more than 40,000 patents all around the world. They’ve already got over 28,000 of those patents approved, which is quite an achievement! It just goes to show how serious they are about coming up with new and exciting ideas.
