The company stated it has no evidence to support the cyberattack assertions, with initial findings indicating attempted cable theft caused the service disruption. Internet service across Dallas and surrounding areas returned to normal operation, and AT&T continued monitoring its network while reviewing relevant information from the incident.
The fiber outage significantly affected Dallas residents and surrounding communities. Over 7,000 Dallas families experienced service disruptions, while Houston customers also reported issues beginning as early as Sunday. The outage gained attention on social media and monitoring platforms, with Downdetector showing an initial surge of reports shortly after 2:15 a.m. on Monday. A second major spike occurred around 2:17 p.m., when over 5,000 outage reports were submitted within a short timeframe. AT&T responded to growing customer concerns through an X post around 4 p.m., confirming that local engineering teams were actively working to restore network connectivity.
AT&T spokeswoman Andrea Huguely provided insight into how cable theft creates confusion on infrastructure sites. Fiber optic cables are made of glass and have minimal resale value compared to copper wiring. However, thieves often cannot distinguish between fiber and copper cables in the field. Thieves can cut fiber wires using basic tools like clippers while cables remain attached to utility poles. More dangerously, they may access underground cable vaults through manholes, creating serious safety hazards in addition to service disruptions. These actions represent both criminal activity and significant operational challenges for telecommunications providers managing extensive infrastructure networks.
The outage disrupted internet access for thousands of customers during the Labor Day period. Service restoration required coordination among engineering teams to identify damaged sections, assess the extent of the cable cuts, and implement necessary repairs. To address customer impact, AT&T announced it would provide bill credits to customers who experienced qualifying outages lasting 20 minutes or longer. This policy aims to compensate customers for service disruptions beyond their control and acknowledge the inconvenience caused by the incident.
