MG GO! Electric Car Confirmed for 2027 — Retro Compact Hatchback Eyes Affordable EV Market

MG has confirmed a production version of the MG GO! electric hatchback for 2027, previewing one of the first genuinely compact electric cars aimed directly at replacing small petrol hatchbacks in the UK and European market. Designed in London and built on classic MG styling cues, it targets a B-segment space that current electric vehicle ranges have largely left empty.

MG Motor confirmed the MG GO! production timeline as 2027. The car was designed by Carl Gotham’s team at MG’s Advanced Design Centre in London. The styling draws on the classic MGB GT. MG positions it as a B-segment city hatchback. No confirmed retail price has been announced. Industry reporting — not confirmed by parent company SAIC — suggests European or Spanish assembly as a potential strategy to reduce exposure to EU tariffs applied since 2024 to Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles sold into the EU market. MG has not confirmed a manufacturing location or UK pricing.

Prospective EV buyers who have held back because nothing affordable in the current market feels correctly sized now have a confirmed new option arriving in 2027. The MG GO! targets the segment directly below the crossover EVs that currently dominate the affordable electric market. Final pricing has not been confirmed. Anyone planning a new car purchase in the next 18 months should include it in their shortlist alongside the Renault 5 and the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2.

MG’s decision to design the GO! in London rather than China is deliberate positioning. The MGB GT reference anchors the car’s identity in British sporting compact heritage — a market where MG has its strongest brand recognition. The London design centre has handled MG’s European styling strategy since the brand re-entered the UK market under SAIC ownership.

The manufacturing location question carries direct financial weight. If SAIC builds the GO! in China, the EU tariffs on Chinese-manufactured EVs apply to European sales. Assembly in Spain or another EU country avoids those tariffs for EU buyers, and SAIC is reportedly considering this option, though no decision has been announced.
