Medicare's annual enrollment window opens 15 October, and many beneficiaries will see notices about next year's plan. Most people do not need to change anything. The real task is checking whether your doctors, medicines and pharmacy still fit your plan before the window closes on 7 December.
Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, according to Medicare.gov. Changes made during the window take effect on January 1 of the following year. People with Medicare Advantage can switch plans or adjust drug coverage. People with Original Medicare can choose a drug plan. Eligible people may switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, subject to the rules that apply to their coverage.
You do not have to act if your current plan still works for you. Medicare.gov says only people who want to change their coverage need to act. Review the notice your plan sends before deciding anything.
A simple review checklist
Start with your Annual Notice of Change, the letter that explains what your plan will cost and cover next year. Check three things: your monthly premium, your prescription costs and whether your pharmacy is still in network.
Next, enter your medicines into the Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov. Confirm that each one is covered and see what it will cost. Then check that your doctors are still in your plan's network.
Finally, compare total yearly cost, not just the monthly premium. A plan with a low premium can cost more if your medicines are placed in a higher-cost tier. Compare at least two plans if your needs or your plan's terms have changed.
Think of the enrollment window like a yearly insurance check-up. Most people only need a quick look.
If you decide to switch, submit your request by 7 December. Do not wait until the deadline.
Open enrollment is a chance to confirm your coverage for January. Read your notice, check your medicines and doctors, and make changes only if your plan no longer fits.
