A startup called Ghost is selling a dedicated $3,499 desktop computer built to run AI entirely on local hardware, without sending data to cloud servers. If that sounds like a pitch aimed at privacy-focused technologists, it is — but $11 million in venture funding led by Andreessen Horowitz suggests investors believe the audience is broader than that.
Ghost was co-founded by 19-year-old Zain Javaid and Nicholas Chua, who raised $11 million in seed funding to build the Ghost Core — a standalone, screenless personal computer designed to run autonomous AI agents locally. Users access it through a phone or app rather than a built-in display. Priced at $3,499, it positions against Apple’s high-end Mac Studio as an AI-native appliance. Hardware inside the Core includes an Nvidia RTX Pro 4000 Blackwell SFF Edition GPU with 24GB of GDDR7 memory, an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 processor, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. Three AI models come preinstalled: Qwen-3.8-Next, Qwen-3.8-27B, and Gemma-4-31B. Batch 1 is sold out and ships October 31, 2026.
Prospective buyers should recognize that the Ghost Core is an early-adopter hardware bet competing directly with established local AI setups on Apple silicon and high-end Nvidia workstations. While local memory and device-level agent firewalls offer compelling data privacy, consumer AI hardware startups historically face rapid change in the open-source model landscape, which can make standalone appliances with fixed hardware less competitive within a single product cycle.
What the Core Does — and Its Central Privacy Claim
The Core’s central claim is local agentic computing: AI agents that can monitor health data, manage files, and automate tasks without routing anything through a third-party server. According to Javaid, one example use case involves the device cross-referencing resting heart rate against late-night computer activity to generate localized health alerts, with that biometric data never leaving the machine. The Core also includes a built-in software firewall designed to monitor and block AI agents from sending logins, passwords, or personal files over external networks.
The Andreessen Horowitz-led round also included Abstract, Audacious Ventures, SV Angel, and Nova. Ghost came out of stealth on October 5, 2026, alongside the product announcement.
The Risk the Marketing Copy Won’t Mention
Ghost is a closed-source system from an unproven startup asking users to trust a proprietary firewall with their most sensitive digital credentials — passwords, financial records, private communications. Local hardware privacy is a legitimate proposition. The question for buyers is whether the combination of hardware, firmware, and agent management that Ghost provides is worth the premium compared to setting up equivalent local AI capabilities on hardware they already own. Independent reviews and third-party testing, expected after units ship October 31, will provide the clearest comparisons.
