WhatsApp is testing a new protection that catches scams before they take your money. The platform is rolling out Scam Alert, an AI feature powered by on-device machine learning that warns you when an incoming message from an unknown sender looks fraudulent.
The feature is currently available to Android beta users on version 2.26.34.1, discovered by WABetaInfo. It remains optional—off by default—and requires manual activation through Settings > Account.
Here’s what makes this different from other fraud alerts: the technology works on your phone alone. No message content leaves your device for analysis. WhatsApp does not scan your messages. Meta does not scan your messages. No one else sees them. The AI model runs locally, meaning your privacy is protected while the system learns to spot fraud patterns.
When an incoming message from an unknown sender appears suspicious, you receive a warning. You can then decide what to do: mark the sender as trusted, block the sender, report the message, or share the last five messages with WhatsApp to improve the AI model’s accuracy. That final option helps train the system without surrendering your personal data.
The feature targets specific scam types that cost people real money: pig butchering scams, fake money transfers, and romance scams. Pig butchering scams work by building trust over weeks or months before requesting money. Romance scams exploit loneliness and isolation. Fake payment scams mimic legitimate transfers. Each costs thousands per victim.
FTC Trade Commission data shows the scale of the problem. Online fraud losses reach billions annually. Scam reports surge every year. The financial impact falls hardest on people with limited digital experience and isolated individuals vulnerable to manipulation.
WhatsApp’s approach is pragmatic: detect fraud at the point of first contact. If the system flags a message as likely fraudulent, it gives you immediate information before you engage with the scammer. This creates a barrier to manipulation before the relationship builds.
The privacy design matters because it maintains trust. You do not have to choose between security and privacy. The feature does not require WhatsApp to read your messages. It does not require uploading your data. It simply analyzes what arrives and lets you know if something looks wrong.
