A record wait for the first hurricane
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season reached a remarkable point: 103 days into the season with no hurricane. CNN meteorologist Chris Dolce reported that this is the latest first-hurricane wait known with confidence since 1966, when satellite tracking made records more reliable.
The previous latest first hurricanes were Gustav in 2002 and Humberto in 2013, both on September 11. This year moved past that mark. Dolce also reported that, with only five short-lived tropical storms so far, the season is the least active since 1950, according to Colorado State University hurricane expert Phil Klotzbach.
Why El Niño is holding storms down
The main reason is El Niño-driven wind shear. Wind shear changes wind speed or direction at different levels of the atmosphere. It can tear developing storms apart before they become hurricanes. CNN reported that shear has been record-strong across the Atlantic’s main development region from Africa through the Caribbean.
Tropical Storm Dolly formed in that region but was ripped apart within 24 hours. Tropical Storm Edouard came closer. It was 14 mph short of hurricane strength when it made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border, cutting off its warm-water fuel.
Quiet does not mean harmless
The danger is that a slow hurricane count can hide real damage from weaker systems. Tropical Storm Arthur’s remnants caused widespread flooding along the central Gulf Coast. CNN reported that Cottonport, Louisiana, received 29.06 inches of rain in 24 hours, beating the previous state record of 22 inches set in 1962. That record is still being reviewed and certified.
Edouard also caused dangerous flash flooding and water rescues in eastern Texas. CNN reported that a month’s worth of rain fell in an hour and that some areas north of Beaumont topped 20 inches.
The season still has time left
Just over half of a typical Atlantic season’s activity occurs after September 10. Late-season storms often form closer to the United States, including the Gulf and areas off the Southeast coast, where El Niño’s wind shear can be less dominant. The quiet-season warning is Hurricane Andrew. CNN noted that the Category 5 hurricane hit South Florida in August 1992 during a season with only seven storms. The 2026 Atlantic record is real, but the season is not finished. The article should avoid predicting that no hurricane will form.
