Why don’t scientists think it’s a real object?
The feature appears in a single reported frame and is absent from nearby images of the scene. Curiosity takes photos in quick sequences, and the images taken 13 seconds before and nearby images of the same scene taken seconds earlier do not show it. Its absence from nearby frames makes a persistent physical object in the scene less likely.
What is a cosmic ray artifact?
Cosmic rays are high-energy particles that travel through space. When one of these particles strikes a digital camera sensor, it can create a bright streak, dot, or odd-shaped artifact in the image — completely unrelated to anything actually in front of the camera. Mars does not have a planet-wide global magnetic field like Earth’s, leaving its surface environment more exposed to space radiation.
