Your pension payment depends on a calculation that DWP reviews periodically. Right now, thousands of Pension Credit claimants are receiving letters asking for bank statements covering recent months—and the confusion around this is understandable.

Here’s what’s actually happening: DWP conducts routine reviews of Pension Credit claims to make sure payments match current circumstances. If you’re selected, you’ll get an official letter with a specific deadline to supply bank or building society statements. This isn’t optional—ignoring the request can result in payment suspension.

The reason DWP focuses on bank records comes down to a simple financial rule. The first £10,000 of your savings or investments is ignored entirely when calculating your benefit. Above that amount, every £500 (or any part of £500) counts as £1 per week of income, which directly reduces your payment. This threshold matters enormously for someone living on limited income. If DWP suspects someone has declared less capital than they actually hold, those statements verify the true position.

The statistics tell an important story beyond the headlines. Recent figures show that 37% of Pension Credit claims contained some form of inaccuracy—but this doesn’t mean 37% of pensioners were committing fraud. Instead, it means payments were wrong in some direction: either too high (overpayments) or too low (underpayments). The department identified £80 million in underpayments in the most recent year, meaning genuine claimants actually received less than they were entitled to.

If you receive a review letter, what happens next is straightforward: submit your complete bank statements showing all transactions and running balances, as required by DWP compliance guidelines. If you can’t manage this alone—because of age, disability, or illness—someone with Power of Attorney can submit the documents on your behalf. DWP helpline staff can also guide you through what’s needed.

The stakes go beyond Pension Credit itself. That benefit can provide entitlement to Council Tax reductions, free TV licenses for over-75s, and NHS dental support. Failing to respond to a review letter jeopardizes these connected benefits, which is why the deadline matters.

For 2026-27, the minimum Pension Credit guarantee sits at £238 per week for single people and £363.25 for couples. DWP is also introducing a change from autumn 2026 that allows pensioners to apply for both Pension Credit and Housing Benefit through streamlined administration.

The bottom line is practical: if DWP contacts you, respond within the deadline with requested documents. If you’re uncertain about anything, call the official helpline rather than ignoring the letter.
