A new extended-range electric vehicle is changing what luxury SUVs can be. The Land Rover Freelander 8 eREV, developed through a partnership between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, packs premium cabin technology into a genuine all-terrain package—a combination most premium electric rivals have quietly dropped.
The interior’s centrepiece is a 46.3-inch panoramic 8K display stretching 1.2 metres across the dashboard—300 mm wider than mainstream competitors—with 1,000-nit brightness that stays readable in full sunlight. Every model in the lineup runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 automotive chip, delivering three times the CPU power, nearly three times the GPU performance, and a 12-fold jump in neural-processing capability compared with the previous generation. That computing headroom powers Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 autonomous-driving suite, which comes standard across all variants.
Under the body sits a 60.331 kWh CATL battery paired with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. The engine acts purely as a generator—it never drives the wheels—giving 221 kilometres (137 miles) of pure electric range before it activates. The 800-volt electrical architecture supports peak charging at up to 350 kW, placing it among the fastest-charging extended-range vehicles on sale. The six-seat cabin offers Zero-Gravity captain’s chairs in the second row with heating, ventilation, massage, and recline functions. All three rows include ventilated seating as standard. Nine terrain modes—snow, mud, sand, rock, water-crossing, economy, comfort, sport, and expert—are backed by three differential locks and a closed dual-chamber air suspension system. Compare this breadth of off-road capability with what companies like other electric performance brands or long-range EV pioneers offer, and the Freelander 8 occupies a distinct niche.
The vehicle measures between 5,118 and 5,185 mm in length, 2,050 mm wide, and 1,898 mm tall, with a 3,040-mm wheelbase. Gross weight is 3,495 kg. Production began July 30, 2026, at Chery’s Changshu plant in Jiangsu Province. Pre-sales open August 10, 2026, with cumulative pre-orders reaching 3,976 units through May, including 997 units in May alone. A left-hand-drive version for Middle East markets is planned for late 2026 or early 2027; no North American launch date has been confirmed.
The Freelander 8 competes directly with the BMW iX3 and Denza B5, as well as extended-range SUVs from BYD and Li Auto. Its approach—combining the JLR heritage name, Chery manufacturing, CATL batteries, Huawei software, and Qualcomm chips—reflects a broader shift in how global automotive brands are assembling products for the Chinese premium EV market. Karmactive has followed luxury EV brand strategies evolving rapidly in recent years; the Freelander 8 is the clearest example yet of a legacy marque betting on partnership over solo development.
