Honda has officially confirmed the all-new Prelude will launch in Japan this September, marking the return of the iconic sports coupe after a 24-year absence. The sixth-generation Prelude will feature a hybrid powertrain and borrows performance parts from the Civic Type R.

Developed under Honda’s “Unlimited Glide” concept, the new Prelude aims to deliver what the company calls an “uplifting sensation of gliding through the air.” The design draws inspiration from gliders, featuring a low, sharp front nose and smooth body lines that contribute to its aerodynamic appearance.

The Prelude will be powered by an advanced version of Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system. While specific power figures haven’t been released, it will introduce a new feature called Honda S+ Shift, which creates simulated gear shifts for a more engaging driving experience.

Performance enthusiasts will appreciate that Honda has equipped the Prelude with key components from the Civic Type R, including dual-axis front suspension, wider track width, and Brembo front brakes. These parts have been tuned for a balance between sportiness and everyday comfort.

Inside, the Prelude offers a practical yet sporty cabin with a white and deep blue color scheme. The coupe combines specialty sports car styling with everyday usability through features like a liftback tailgate, split-folding rear seats, and underfloor storage.

The global rollout plan includes Japan in September 2025, North America in late 2025, and Australia by mid-2026. This staggered release reflects Honda’s strategy for bringing the hybrid sports coupe to different markets.

“The return of the Honda Prelude as a hybrid-electric sports model demonstrates our continued commitment to offer a variety of exhilarating products,” said Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales for the American market.

Honda’s revival of the Prelude nameplate is significant as it represents the brand’s effort to maintain its sports car heritage while moving toward electrification. The original Prelude debuted in 1978 and over five generations became known for introducing advanced technologies like the world’s first four-wheel steering system.

With the new Prelude, Honda hopes to create what it calls a “prelude” for future specialty sports models in the electrified era, balancing performance with environmental considerations.
