There are many countries across the world that sell water in plastic pouches. These bags are thrown away once used. It only adds on to the plastic waste that is massively generated everyday and every year.

Hiky Muda Clothing based in Tamale, Ghana have found a solution to the waste generated by single-use plastic water pouches. Under the “Pure-water” raincoat project, they have designed a raincoat made out of these plastic

pouches.

They upcycle this plastic into raincoats by collecting, cleaning and drying them. Once clean, they are ironed to remove any creases. They are then stitched together in the design of a raincoat.

This initiative can be beneficial in so many ways. There will be reduction of plastic, recycling and upcycling will reduce the cost of raincoat and protect the environment from single use plastic. And of course it will give us raincoats to protect from rain and stormy weather.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use or disposable plastic — with severe environmental consequences. Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, while 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used worldwide every year.
