Stingray Is Not Smiling But Suffocating After Tickle

In this viral video a little stingray is seen out of the water & onboard a boat. The certain person tickles the ray. This video has bombed the internet.

But the issue is that the stingray is suffocating and not smiling. Out of the water the marine life is struggling to breathe but it’s expressions seem like it is smiling.

Stingrays, like all cartilaginous fish, extract oxygen through their gills, which must remain submerged in water. When removed from their aquatic environment, they cannot breathe and quickly suffocate.

Marine wildlife experts from NOAA Fisheries emphasize that even brief exposure out of water can cause severe physiological stress in stingrays and other elasmobranchs. The practice of handling wild marine animals for entertainment videos has drawn criticism from conservation organizations including the Wildlife Conservation Society and Project AWARE.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), many stingray populations face threats from habitat degradation, pollution, and direct human interaction. Responsible wildlife viewing guidelines recommend observing marine animals in their natural habitat without physical contact.

Marine biologists note that the “smiling” expression often seen in distressed stingrays is a reflex of their jaw muscles relaxing post-mortem, not an indication of contentment. Ethical wildlife tourism advocates encourage supporting marine sanctuaries and conservation groups that protect ocean ecosystems rather than sharing footage that exploits wild animals.

Marine biologists emphasize that stingrays have been on Earth for over 400 million years, long outliving dinosaurs and surviving five mass extinction events through remarkable adaptability.

Aquariums worldwide use specialized water filtration systems to maintain ocean-quality conditions for stingrays in captivity.
