Singapore Airlines has won the Skytrax World Airline Award for the sixth time, topping a 2026 ranking built on responses from more than 24.8 million travellers across 100-plus nationalities. Qatar Airways placed second, Cathay Pacific third, ANA fourth and Turkish Airlines fifth. The award covers passenger satisfaction, not safety certification or operational performance, and the distinction matters if you are using it to book a flight.

Skytrax ran its 2026 survey between September 2025 and August 2026. More than 300 airlines were included in the results. Skytrax says the 2026 awards were based on a global passenger survey conducted from September 2025 through August 2026. Singapore Airlines also took the category awards for best economy class and best economy-class catering, adding two specialist wins to its top-ranking position.

For passengers deciding which airline to book, a Skytrax top ranking is a meaningful signal about service quality — but it is not a guarantee that Singapore Airlines is the cheapest, most punctual or safest carrier for your specific journey. The ranking measures how passengers rated their experience; it is not drawn from safety-audit data, on-time statistics or baggage-handling records. Use the award as one input alongside route availability, fare, cabin class, luggage rules and connection times when making a booking decision.

How Skytrax Chooses the World's Best Airline

The Skytrax ranking is a passenger-satisfaction survey, not a technical inspection. Travellers who flew on participating airlines during the survey period rated their experience across areas including check-in, boarding, cabin environment, seat comfort, cabin service, catering, and in-flight entertainment. The total sample — more than 24.8 million responses in 2026 — is one of the largest in airline research.

What the survey does not measure: government accident records, on-time performance data or engineering standards. Those are tracked separately by aviation authorities and independent flight-data providers. The award itself is a passenger-satisfaction measure, not a safety certification. Any article or booking site that uses "world's best" as shorthand for "safest" is conflating two separate things.

Qatar Airways, which ranked first in Skytrax's 2021, 2022 and 2024 surveys, dropped to second in 2026. Cathay Pacific's third-place finish puts two Asia-Pacific carriers in the top three. ANA (All Nippon Airways) in fourth and Turkish Airlines in fifth round out a top five that spans three continents.

How was Singapore Airlines named the world's best airline?

Skytrax based the 2026 ranking on a global passenger-satisfaction survey running from September 2025 through August 2026. More than 24.8 million travellers participated across 100-plus nationalities, with 300-plus airlines in the results. Singapore Airlines ranked first and also won best economy class and economy-class catering. The award reflects passenger satisfaction ratings, not a safety audit or punctuality league table.
