The civil verdict against Ebony Parker established legal liability for what happened at Richneck Elementary. What the verdict and the evidence presented at trial do not establish is the claim that a six-year-old acted from ideological conviction.

In January 2023, a 6-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, shot teacher Abby Zwerner. Police bodycam footage from the aftermath was shown during the civil trial. In November 2025, a Virginia jury awarded Zwerner $10 million. She had sought $40 million. The case was brought against Ebony Parker, the former assistant principal, on a gross negligence theory. The jury found that Parker failed to act on warnings that the child had a gun. Parker’s related criminal charges were subsequently dismissed in 2026.

What Research Shows About Extreme Aggression in Young Children

Developmental researchers and clinicians who study early childhood aggression do not attribute severe violence at age six to ideological radicalization. Children in early elementary years are still developing the cognitive capacities for abstract reasoning and causal planning. When a young child engages in severe physical aggression, behavioral science points to factors including severe emotional dysregulation, exposure to domestic conflict, developmental trauma, or neurological conditions affecting impulse regulation—not organized ideological intent.

The lethal variable in cases like this one is access to a loaded firearm. Severe emotional disturbance in a young child without access to a weapon produces a different outcome. The Richneck case drew scrutiny to what happens when institutional warnings go unaddressed and firearms are accessible. The jury’s finding focused on Parker’s failure to act on specific warnings, not on a generalized diagnosis of the child.

What can schools do when a student shows signs of severe dysregulation?

Schools can convene threat assessment teams, coordinate with families on behavior intervention plans, and in extreme cases request law enforcement welfare checks. The jury in this case found that Parker had received warnings and did not take adequate action; consult the verdict and court filings for the specific findings.

What are the storage rules for firearms in homes with children?

In Virginia, under law effective in 2026, a person who possesses a firearm in a residence where they know a minor or prohibited person is present must store it in a locked container or cabinet inaccessible to that person, or render it inoperable with a gun lock. Many other states have enacted child access prevention laws; check your state’s current requirements.

Is childhood exposure to media violence linked to real-world aggression?

Some research finds an association between exposure to violent media and desensitization to aggression in certain contexts. The evidence for a direct causal pathway from media exposure to extreme physical violence in young children is more limited; behavioral researchers point to emotional dysregulation and environmental factors as primary drivers.

Store firearms locked and unloaded, in a quick-access safe if rapid adult use is important to you. Trigger locks add a second barrier. Ask your school what its protocol is for students with active behavior intervention plans.
