Portland Public Schools is proposing to close as many as 14 schools to address a structural $65 million budget shortfall projected for the 2027–28 school year. For families in the district, the timeline matters — public hearings are open through autumn 2026.
PPS has released three scenarios: Scenario A closes 14 schools (13 elementary schools and one middle school, including Maplewood, Irvington, Buckman, Creston, and Sellwood Middle School among others); Scenario B closes 11 schools; and Scenario C maintains the current configuration. The district cites rising operational costs for aging buildings and the exhaustion of federal pandemic relief funding as primary drivers. The district has already cut $171.8 million in services since 2023–24 and is still projecting a $65.2 million structural deficit for 2027–28.
Portland families whose neighborhood schools appear on the consideration list should review the district’s public hearing schedule and submit written comments before the window closes. Consolidation would reduce operational costs from maintaining under-enrolled facilities but would require extended busing routes across quadrants of the city for affected students.
The full list of schools under consideration, proposed boundary revision maps, and the public comment portal are available on the Portland Public Schools official website. The school board will conduct community listening sessions through autumn 2026, with a final vote on the consolidation plan scheduled for early 2027. Search “PPS Rightsizing” on the district’s website for current planning documents and hearing dates by neighborhood.
