Senator Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has been absent from the Senate for nearly three months following his June hospitalization and subsequent rehabilitation. He was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall at his Washington home, spent time in rehabilitation and was discharged in early August.

The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on September 14, 2026. McConnell allies have said his staff hoped he would return when the Senate reconvenes, but his office has not publicly confirmed a return date. A September 3 report said McConnell’s staff had described returning on September 14 as their goal, while a spokesperson said there were no scheduling announcements at that time.

McConnell has represented Kentucky in the Senate since January 1985. His current term expires in January 2027, and the Senate lists him among the senators who have announced they will retire at the end of their terms.

Before his absence, McConnell’s office announced nearly $2.6 billion in federal funding for Kentucky priorities through the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations process. The February 17 announcement said the amount was a single-year record for Kentucky through the regular appropriations process and included a comprehensive list of the Kentucky projects receiving the funding.

Fiscal Year 2026 ends on September 30. Congress faces that deadline to enact funding legislation or a continuing resolution to prevent a lapse in appropriations. If McConnell returns on September 14, he would be back in the Senate 16 days before the fiscal-year deadline.

As of now, he has not returned. For now, the September 14 return remains an expected target rather than a formally announced date. His return would allow him to participate personally in Senate decisions over funding before the end of his term.
