With Australia's bushfire season approaching, fire authorities are warning electric vehicle owners that a depleted battery during an evacuation isn't just a range problem — it can become a route problem. NSW Rural Fire Service has confirmed the concern is real. Here's what happened in one documented incident and what EV owners in bushfire-prone areas should do now.

ABC News reported on a real evacuation situation in January 2026 in which driver Nigel Raynard entered a bushfire emergency area with less than 15% battery. The nearest available charger was inside an evacuation-controlled zone — the road was closed. NSW Rural Fire Service Superintendent Ben Shepherd confirmed that fire authorities are urging EV owners in rural and regional areas to plan their charging alongside evacuation routes before emergencies develop.

The practical bottleneck isn't simply battery range. During a bushfire emergency, charging infrastructure can become physically inaccessible even when roads leading to it aren't yet closed. An EV with adequate daily range may not have enough to reach an alternative charger if the closest one falls inside a fire zone perimeter.

Why Charger Access Fails in Evacuation Conditions

When authorities issue evacuation orders, road closures don't follow a neat radius from the fire front. They follow access control points, and charging stations in rural towns can fall inside those perimeters regardless of whether the fire is directly nearby. In Raynard's case, the nearest charger fell inside a police-blocked evacuation zone, making it physically inaccessible regardless of its operational status.

Raynard's account illustrates the specific failure mode: the charger existed and was technically operational, but the evacuation order made it inaccessible. The constraint wasn't battery range in the conventional sense — it was that the nearest charge point had effectively been taken off the board by circumstances outside his control.

NSW RFS and other Australian fire services give consistent advice to petrol and diesel drivers: know your route, don't wait for a last-minute warning to leave. For EV owners, bushfire evacuation planning requires an additional step — knowing where the next charger is, not just the closest, and whether it sits outside likely closure zones.

NSW RFS Superintendent Ben Shepherd's advice to EV owners facing bushfire emergencies is to ask themselves: "Is there enough power in the vehicle to get me somewhere safe or a location where I can power it?" Check real-time charger availability and fire perimeter maps before assuming a route is viable.

The 2026 bushfire season is forecast to see elevated fire danger across parts of NSW, Victoria and South Australia. The advice from fire authorities applies to petrol and diesel drivers too — the principle of planning your exit before conditions deteriorate is the same.
