Westpac’s A$10,000 Crypto Payment Cap Starts December 1: What Counts

Australian Westpac customers who send money to crypto exchanges face a monthly ceiling from 1 December 2026. The bank says it may limit those payments to A$10,000 per calendar month.

If you top up an exchange regularly, the change is worth understanding now. It is just over a month away. Here is what the bank’s notice says, and what it leaves open.

The cap is cumulative. Westpac will add up payments across relevant accounts and payment methods. It covers online banking, the Westpac app, credit cards and debit cards.

That matters if you use more than one route. Paying by card and by transfer in the same month counts toward one total, not two separate limits. Our guide to Australian bank crypto limits covers how other lenders handle similar rules.

What happens when you reach the cap

Once payments to crypto exchanges reach the limit, further payments in that calendar month may not go through. The notice sets no workaround, no higher tier and no exemption.

In-branch payments are also affected. Westpac says it does not support in-branch payments it identifies as going to a crypto exchange. A teller visit will not get around the cap.

One thing stays the same. Money coming the other way is unchanged. If you withdraw funds from an exchange into your Westpac account, the new limit does not apply to that transfer.

The limit is also about payments, not your balance. Westpac has not said it will freeze or close accounts because of crypto activity. Read the bank’s own notice in full for the exact wording.

The word “may” runs through the notice. The cap applies to payments Westpac reasonably identifies as going to a crypto exchange. It is not a promise that every crypto-related transfer is blocked or that none will slip through.

In practice, the bank decides what counts. A payment it does not identify as an exchange payment may not be caught. A payment it does identify will be. Customers have no say in that call.

That conditionality is the detail many summaries miss. The cap is a power the bank has given itself, applied by its own systems. How firmly it is enforced will only show once it starts.

Is the cap per account?
No. It is cumulative across relevant accounts and payment methods, so splitting payments does not raise the ceiling.

Can I get an exemption?
No. The notice says there is no exemption and no higher limit.

Can I still receive money from an exchange?
Yes. Withdrawals from an exchange into Westpac are unchanged.

Keep a record of your monthly exchange payments before December. If a payment is declined and you think it was wrongly flagged, raise it with Westpac first. If that fails, you can lodge a complaint through the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

Other banks may follow, and we will track how Westpac applies the rule from 1 December. See our finance coverage for updates.
