Deer archery and crossbow seasons are opening across several US states, but the strongest repeated message from officials is not about the number of deer. It is about the stand hunters climb before the first shot. Wisconsin’s archery and crossbow season begins on September 12 and runs statewide through January 3, 2027.
Derek Johnson, Wisconsin DNR interim deer specialist, said a third mild winter had left reproduction and winter survival looking good. “With good reproduction this spring, there should be lots of deer out there for hunters to pursue,” he said.
The practical warning came from DNR Hunter Education Administrator Lt. Renee Thok. She told hunters to inspect tree stands, straps and buckles before each use, wear a full-body fall-arrest harness, connect the tether line and keep it short. She also told hunters to keep three points of contact while climbing in and out of a stand.
Maryland’s white-tailed deer archery season opened September 11 and runs through January 31, 2027, with breaks for muzzleloader and firearms seasons. Early-zone bow hunting in New Jersey opens September 12, and the first deer must be antlerless through October 2 before the statewide opening on October 3.
