Australia's Renewable Energy Agency has opened applications for the Launchpad program, a $30 million fund supporting early-stage clean energy startups. Applications launched on September 16, 2026 and close at 4pm AEDT on October 28, 2026. This is a direct grant program with no requirement for matching private capital.

What Launchpad Funds

The ARENA Launchpad consists of two streams: a $15 million Startup Funding Round and a $15 million Ecosystem Funding Round. The Startup Round supports pre-seed to seed-stage companies developing clean energy startups technologies and products aligned with ARENA's Investment Plan and Strategic Priorities.

Eligible technology areas include low-cost solar, energy storage, distributed energy, renewable transport, renewable hydrogen, and green metals. Successful applicants in the Startup Round receive $500,000 in grants. Projects with high capital requirements can receive up to a total of $1,000,000.

No Matching Requirement

The Launchpad provides non-dilutive grant funding. There is no requirement for applicants to secure matching private capital. ARENA administers the fund as direct grants to eligible startups. This is different from venture capital or matching-grant structures where private investment must accompany government funds.

Who Qualifies

Applications are open to early-stage companies developing technologies aligned with ARENA's mandate. The program targets hardware and technology development, with emphasis on renewable energy and related sectors. The official ARENA materials do not explicitly state that carbon-offsetting software or digital-only sustainability tools are excluded, though the focus on physical technologies and renewable hardware is clear.

Startups must be pre-seed to seed stage and developing technologies that can be commercially deployed. The application process is now open through ARENANet, with closure at 4pm AEDT on October 28, 2026.

Why This Matters

Many early-stage clean energy startups face a funding gap between research and commercialization. Government grants that do not require matching private capital can help companies reach key development milestones that make them more attractive to investors. Launchpad addresses this gap.

Closure

ARENA's Launchpad applications are open now and close October 28, 2026. The $30 million program is divided equally between startup and ecosystem funding rounds. Eligible companies are developing technologies in renewable energy, storage, and related sectors. Apply through ARENANet before the deadline.
