An apartment building in Athens’ Plaka district collapsed on Friday, September 25, killing six people, including four American tourists on the final day of their holiday. Authorities suspect a gas leak caused the explosion that destroyed the structure steps from the ancient Acropolis.

The two-storey building gave way in the early morning hours, sending debris across the narrow streets of the historic neighbourhood. Among the dead were an American couple, their adult son, and the son’s girlfriend. Two local residents also perished in the blast.

“Everything points to a gas leak,” Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said at the scene. Emergency crews worked through Friday and into Saturday, searching the rubble for survivors and recovering remains. Firefighters deployed heavy machinery to move concrete slabs and steel reinforcement bars as rescue teams combed through the debris methodically.

The American family had spent two weeks touring Greece’s historical sites. Friends and relatives described them as close-knit and passionate about travel. The couple had celebrated their wedding anniversary days before the explosion. Their final moments were to be spent exploring the Acropolis Museum on Saturday morning — a visit that would never happen.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a full investigation into what caused the structure to fail so catastrophically. Gas company officials arrived at the site Friday afternoon to examine lines running through the building. Preliminary findings suggest a rupture in the gas infrastructure may have accumulated fumes in the basement, creating an explosive environment. Neighbours reported smelling gas in the hours before the collapse. One resident said she had called her landlord Thursday evening to report the odor, but it remains unclear if that complaint reached building management or utility companies. This detail has raised questions about whether the disaster could have been prevented with quicker response.

Greece’s building safety record has come under scrutiny following previous collapses. Many structures in older neighbourhoods like Plaka have not undergone modern inspections or retrofitting. The European Union has repeatedly urged Greece to strengthen building codes and enforcement, particularly in districts where tourism drives economic activity and older buildings coexist with modern apartments.

The collapse dealt a blow to Athens’ tourism industry during a season when visitors flock to see antiquities. Local businesses near the site reported cancellations as the area was cordoned off for rescue and investigation work. The bodies of the six victims were transported to the medical examiner’s office for identification and autopsy. U.S. Embassy officials in Athens coordinated with Greek authorities to assist the families of the American victims.

Q: Is it safe to travel to Athens now?
A: Authorities say the area is safe and the building has been inspected. The Plaka district remains open to tourists. The investigation into the gas leak continues.

Q: What caused the Athens explosion?
A: A gas leak is suspected. Fire department officials are investigating the exact cause. Neighbours reported smelling gas before the collapse.

Q: How many Americans died in the Athens explosion?
A: Four of the six dead are confirmed American — a couple, their son, and his girlfriend.
