If you have Target’s Good & Gather light brown or powdered sugar in your kitchen, check the back of the bag before you use it. A recall covering nearly 1.7 million pounds of sugar across eight states means some bags may contain wheat kernels — especially important for people with wheat allergy or celiac disease.
United Sugar Producers and Refiners, based in Minneapolis, initiated a voluntary recall on August 19, 2026. The FDA formally classified it as Class II on September 21. The recall covers approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar, sold under three brand names: United, Good & Gather (Target’s store brand), and Crystal Sugar. Affected products were distributed to Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
If someone in your household has celiac disease or a wheat allergy, stop using the product immediately. If your product matches the recall details, do not consume it and follow the recall instructions for return or disposal.
Check the back seam of your 2-lb Good & Gather bag for these UPC codes: Light Brown Sugar bears UPC 0 85239-08454 0; Powdered Sugar bears UPC 0 85239-08455 7. Good & Gather light brown and powdered sugar bags listed in the recall carry batch codes MHD26223 through MHD26229; Crystal Sugar powdered sugar includes the additional batch code MHD26230. If your bag matches both the UPC and the applicable batch code range, do not use it.

The recalled products may contain wheat kernels. A wheat allergy causes the body to treat wheat proteins as a threat, triggering immune reactions ranging from hives to anaphylaxis. For people with celiac disease, even trace amounts of wheat can cause lasting damage to the small intestine.
Although media coverage has focused on the 2-lb Good & Gather retail bags sold at Target, the recall also covers commercial-size 50-lb United and 25-lb Crystal Sugar bags. Food-service and commercial users in the eight affected states should check their inventory against the full recall notice.
The firm initiated the withdrawal 33 days before the FDA published its formal enforcement classification — a gap worth knowing if you purchased sugar in late August from any retailer in the eight affected states.
The recall remains active. Consumers in the eight affected states should verify their product against the UPC codes and batch numbers above, then return eligible bags to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA enforcement record is available at FDA.gov.
