Alstom opened its first U.S. Innovation Station in Pittsburgh on October 7, 2026, establishing a collaborative hub it describes as focused on accessibility, sustainability, resilience, and passenger experience. The Pittsburgh facility is the fifth in the company's global Innovation Station network, joining existing sites in Paris, Stockholm, Singapore, and Montreal.

The station sits alongside Alstom's global development center for signaling and train control in Pittsburgh. Karina Ricks serves as its inaugural leader. Ricks most recently worked as a partner at Cityfi, an urban strategy consulting firm. Her earlier roles include Associate Administrator for Innovation, Research and Demonstration at the Federal Transit Administration, founding director of Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure — where she launched MovePGH, described as the nation's first Mobility as a Service system — and director of transportation planning for Washington, D.C. Alstom Americas president Michael Keroullé framed the station's purpose as developing ideas locally and testing whether they apply more broadly across the company's operations.

Transit agencies, cities, urban planners, and mobility startups working in North America will have a new venue for collaborative work with one of the world's largest rail equipment manufacturers. The Pittsburgh hub is designed to bring together transit authorities, universities, cities, technology organizations, and startups around specific mobility challenges. Alstom has not announced specific projects, investment figures, or partner organizations for the station.

The Innovation Station model is not a corporate research laboratory. Alstom describes its approach as "local for global" — developing solutions with local partners that can then be tested for broader application across its international business. The other four stations in the network (Paris, Stockholm, Singapore, Montreal) work on regionally specific problems before those insights feed back into Alstom's wider product development.

Ricks's background directly fits the Pittsburgh context. She created Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure from the ground up, overseeing the city's transition to smart signal networks, Vision Zero implementation, and autonomous vehicle policy before moving to Cityfi and, now, Alstom. How Karina Ricks built Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.

Alstom's broader technology portfolio includes tools like AI Talk to My Train — an AI system designed to help rail technicians troubleshoot maintenance and operations — but the company's announcement does not describe that tool as a project of the Pittsburgh station. The station's stated scope is collaborative mobility problem-solving across accessibility, sustainability, resilience, and passenger experience.
