Your wrist now does more than tell time. Apple’s latest watch generation, the Series 12 and the more rugged Ultra 4, brings health tracking that moves beyond simple step counting. The new Health Sensing System measures your heart rate every five seconds throughout the day.

What makes this different is not just faster measurements, but what Apple does with that data. The watches now generate a readiness score that tries to answer a question most people ask themselves: am I ready to push hard today, or should I recover? This score looks at recent activity, training load, vital measurements, and sleep score to produce a recommendation.

Think of it like asking your body what it needs before you hit the gym. The readiness approach analyzes multiple data points to suggest whether you’re primed for intense exercise or need an easier day.

The redesigned Health app on your iPhone adds two new sections worth understanding. A Longevity tab and Health Age feature help you think beyond today’s workout. Health Age is designed to show how selected health metrics are tracking relative to a user’s age. It’s based on your activity, sleep, heart rate, and other metrics the watch collects.

Apple made another quiet but important move: the company is being clear about what these features do and don’t do. These are health insights, not medical diagnoses. Apple describes the Vitals and readiness features as wellness tools rather than medical diagnoses. Other Apple Watch features, such as ECG and certain heart-health notifications, have separate medical-related functions.

Sound Recognition gets less attention but matters to many users. The Series 12 can alert users to important sounds—a baby crying, a doorbell, a siren, or an alarm. That’s useful accessibility for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and it’s built directly into the watch through Audio Intelligence.

Ultra 4 takes the same Health Sensing System into a larger, tougher case designed for outdoor work and adventure. The jump matters if you do serious outdoor activities. Ultra 4 can track outdoor workouts for up to 45 hours according to Apple’s testing. The GPS has been improved to be the most accurate among Apple sports watches.

Here’s something practical: both models use 40 percent recycled material overall. The aluminum case is 100 percent recycled aluminum, and the titanium model uses 100 percent recycled titanium created through a special 3D-printing process. That might sound minor, but if you’re thinking about electronic waste, it’s worth noticing.

Availability matters for Indian readers specifically. Series 12 arrived for pre-order in India on September 10, with store availability from September 18. Here’s the catch: hypertension notifications, which the watch can provide in some countries, won’t be available in India initially. Apple is still working through regulatory approvals for that feature. That availability is expected next year.
