Ford has filed a patent revealing innovative camping features designed to transform the Bronco into a versatile outdoor sleeping platform. Patent No. US 2026/0233661 Al, filed August 13, 2026, covers multiple concepts including a mattress platform over folded rear seatbacks, a piano-hinged full-width panel, and electric heating for the air mattress. The filing suggests Ford is exploring ways to enhance the Bronco’s appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and adventure travelers.
The patent describes a cargo shelf system spanning the rear cargo area alongside fold-out nightstand tables integrated into the front seatbacks. These components would allow occupants to create a functional sleeping and resting area without requiring tent setup outside the vehicle. For those preferring rooftop sleeping, the patent illustrates multiple tent designs with ingress points through the sunroof opening, eliminating the need for exterior ladder systems that complicate entry and exit.
One concept includes solar panel integration across half the upper roof panel. This feature would power electronics and accessories while providing a trickle charge to the 12-volt battery system, extending the vehicle’s off-grid capability. Solar-powered charging addresses a growing demand among camping enthusiasts who spend extended time in remote locations without access to traditional power sources.
The sleeping platform designs require varying degrees of front seat manipulation. The simpler concept uses a one-piece panel that flips forward with folding legs that reach the floor for stability. A more complex version preserves the rear seatback’s 60/40-folding capability by using panels that engage with supports folding from the front seatbacks. This flexibility would accommodate different cargo and passenger configurations while maintaining sleeping platform functionality.
The current Bronco lineup starts at approximately $40,795 with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The model achieves 20 MPG city and 21 MPG highway ratings. Ford has teased a premium Filson edition variant for the 2027 model year, positioning the brand as an option for upscale outdoor enthusiasts.
The next-generation Bronco is expected to enter production in late 2029 as a 2030 model. Industry observers anticipate enhanced camping and off-road capabilities will be central to the redesign.
Ford stated that patent submissions are standard business practice. The process protects intellectual property and builds a portfolio of innovations the company may integrate into future vehicle designs.
